It's a Small World After All - Jeanne Guisinger, Class of 2010

Just the other day I was walking out of the supermarket when I noticed a headline of a small local newspaper, the Machias Valley News Observer.  Now, I don’t suppose that everyone gets the majority of their news from the paper, but it’s a friendly well-written, small-town newspaper.  The headline that caught my eye said “Eastport Schooner Headed to Haiti with Relief Supplies”.  The story told the story about Eastport’s Halie & Matthew enroute to Haiti with 45,000 pounds of relief goods.  Knowing the schooner well, I got one of those warm, fuzzy moments.

I bought the paper and took it home to get the whole story.  Then on page three, I caught a headline “Maine Women’s Leadership Group and Iraqi Visitors Share Political Stories”.  It was a story about women from Iraqi organizations that are currently in elected positions or other positions of leadership in their communities.  They were visiting the Maine’s State Capital as part of the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program.  The Iraqi women met with Emerge Maine leaders, sharing their own personal perspectives and experiences.  Cool!

It is a small word after all.  Another warm, fuzzy moment.
